About us

Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD) is a Special District – a form of local government authorized under state law and created to perform a specific purpose. In our case, that purpose is to serve the park and recreation needs of our constituents. Purposes of other special districts include fire protection, health services, water and sanitation. We are not part of Jefferson County. We are a separate entity with our own taxing authority. All tax revenue and other funds we collect go to serve our park and recreation needs.

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District (originally named the Evergreen Metropolitan Recreation and Park District and renamed in 1992) was authorized in January 1969 by a vote of the residents of the area. At that time, the stated purpose of the District was to provide recreational opportunities to its residents and construct a community center with a swimming pool.

Today, Evergreen Park & Recreation District serves approximately 23,000 people residing within the District boundaries. Evergreen is easily accessed via I‐70, Hwy 285, or Hwy 74 through Bear Creek Canyon. The District is one of the largest in the state, covering 50,000 acres (78 square miles) in the foothills west of Denver. The District serves the communities of Evergreen, Bergen Park, Indian Hills, Kittredge, and Marshdale.

The District is governed by a Board of Directors elected by residents of the District. The Board of Directors of the Evergreen Park & Recreation District is made up of 5 individuals elected from the District at large. They each serve for a term of 4 years and may serve up to two consecutive terms. Board seat elections are held in May of even‐numbered years for those Directors whose terms have expired. To help ensure continuity of service on the Board, terms are staggered such that no more than 3 Directors are elected in any given election cycle.  Vacancies that occur between election cycles are filled by the Board of Directors who appoints an individual to serve out the remaining term of the vacant seat.

The citizens of the Evergreen Park & Recreation District place high value in their parks, recreation facilities, and programs. They recognize the importance of these services as an enhancement to the quality of life of the community. This commitment is embodied in the District’s strong parks and recreation system with unique facilities such as Buchanan Park, Buchanan Park Recreation Center, Evergreen Lake House, and Wulf Recreation Center.

More information regarding Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s history and continuing commitment to the community can be seen throughout the information included in this website.
